Massively’s Community Detective, Issue #7: Star Wars Galaxies

Community Detective is back after a week off and looking forward to bringing you news you can use when evaluating MMORPG communities and customer service. This week, I take a look at our third Sony Online Entertainment title, the venerable sci-fi sandbox known as Star Wars Galaxies.

While SOE gets a lot of hate in the gamer community (much of it, ironically, for the same SWG that we’re going to examine today), several of its titles provide some of the best customer service in the business, and SWG is no exception. Similarly, the game’s community features an unusually high number of helpful people, particularly on the Starsider server.

Follow along after the cut to see what we found.

PAX 2010: Guild Wars 2 hands-on

I finally found time to check out Guild Wars 2 firsthand this morning, and the experience will easily be counted as the highlight of PAX so far in my book.

The demo booth was my first stop this morning, and I was excited to go through the character creation process and save Shaemoor. I’ve seen a dozen videos of just that, but there’s nothing like playing through it firsthand. As I was playing, several ArenaNet staffers passed by, said hello, and chatted a bit.

I spent much of my demo time exploring all the character options, learning the controls, and looking around Shaemoor, growing a little anxious all the while. The clock was ticking and I hadn’t seen nearly everything I wanted to. With about 10 minutes left, a few ArenaNet devs surprised me by stepping in and offering to show off some more content — particularly legacy sites, something that was at the top of my wish list for the demo.

While there are no earth-shattering new revelations (sorry, no class reveal), it was exciting to check out some features in more detail. Follow along after the jump for screenshots, pictures, descriptions and video recorded in genuine shakycam!

Zynga Sued by Rival Developer over Mafia Wars Name

Online game developer Digital Chocolate has sued rival Zynga, claiming that the popular social game Mafia Wars infringes on its trademark (via Courthouse News).

Digital Chocolate claims that they coined the name for their own game in 2004 and have superior rights to the trademark. They also say that they sent written notification to Zynga last year, who in turn promised to stop using the name.

However, Zynga has since embarked on a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign with 7-Eleven while filing additional trademark applications for the property.

Clone Wars Adventures open beta begins

Sony Online Entertainment’s Clone Wars Adventures MMO snuck up on us last night, steathily going into open beta and allowing interested parties to Force-jump in, kick the tires (sorry, repulsor-lifts), and light the fires. Clicking the hard-to-miss “beta” tab on the official website will get you started, and from there it’s a quick ride through account and character creation to the game proper.

The title will officially launch on September 15th, two days prior to the Season Three premiere of the television series on which it’s based. The game is free-to-play, features microtransactions, and can be downloaded from the official website. Alternatively, you can check out a special retail box that goes on sale October 5th and includes a 90-day membership, Station Cash, and a Togruta player character.

Check out our previous CWA coverage for more information.

Gamescom 2010: Guild Wars 2 demo video available, dev confirms necro class

Yesterday’s footage of Guild Wars 2 being shown at Gamescom caused a huge stir in the GW2 community, but it was a little different than the one-on-one demos we’ve been waiting on. The first video was attendee footage of a developer player in godmode, who was invisible to the enemies for the sake of showing off some details of the game.

Today, we get the real thing. 1UP has footage of their demo available, and it’s a human vs. earth elemental battle on a pretty grand scale.

That’s not the only news coming out of Cologne this morning, though. Spong.com is reporting in a brief blurb that Colin Johanson told them that the necromancer is indeed the next class to be revealed. While ArenaNet has not announced this anywhere, in the demo video you are able to hear the necro class and a few of its abilities mentioned.

Follow along after the jump to see the demo firsthand, and don’t forget to keep an eye on NCsoft’s live feed from Gamescom!

Star Wars Galaxies puts up producer’s notes from Fan Faire

The big showstoppers at Sony Online Entertainment’s Fan Faire this year were the presentations on the EverQuest franchise and DC Universe Online, without a doubt. But to neglect Star Wars Galaxies is unfair to the game’s long history, as well as to the fact that the game had quite a presentation at the celebrated event. In a recent producer’s note, Teesquared shared several photos from the event as well as the notes from the Galactic Gathering panel, outlining everything planned for the game in the not-too-distant future.

While the photos are nice for fans who missed it, the notes are the meaty part of the announcement, discussing everything from the next major content update to future event plans. The Witches of Dathomir is the next planned major content push, with repeatable content and a number of new clothing options for players. Big plans are also on the horizon for the Galactic Civil War, including invasions in space with capital ships and integration for player-created cities. It looks to be an interesting ride for the future of Star Wars Galaxies, so players are advised to take a look at the full notes for a hint of what’s coming.

Advance Jedi Knight Classes Revealed for Star Wars: TOR

Star Wars: The Old Republic

BioWare has revealed the two advanced Jedi Knight specializations for Star Wars: The Old Republic, their upcoming MMO set in the Star Wars universe: The Jedi Knight Guardian and the Jedi Knight Sentinel.

So far BioWare has only issued short blurbs for each, which don’t provide a whole lot of specific details, but by the sound of it the Guardian will be more tank- and support-based, while the Sentinel will be more geared for damage-dealing. The Guardian is described as being known for “inspiring allies” and having “smooth movement even in heavy armor — making the Guardian a hard target to take down.” The Sentinel, on the other hand, can wield two lightsabers, and can “see holes in the enemy defense, potential flaws in their own technique, and how best to plan for both.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic is planned for release next spring, and closed “game testing” has already begun.

This game will care that you’re there: Our look at the Guild Wars 2 manifesto

Earlier this week, ArenaNet promised a new Guild Wars 2 video. That announcement came with a warning: no, it’s not a new class reveal, and many fans were pretty disappointed. What could possibly serve as an adequate substitute for a class reveal? It’s safe to say that the disappointment was blown out of the water yesterday with the unveiling of the MMO Manifesto and the Walking the Walk blog post.

Merriam-Webster defines the word manifesto as a “a written statement declaring publicly the intentions, motives, or views of its issuer,” but when the word is used in context, there are usually strong feelings behind those intentions. Revolutionary, groundbreaking, and change are words associated with such a thing, and it was a word well-chosen by ArenaNet with this newest reveal.

Follow along after the jump as we take a closer look at what ArenaNet showed us yesterday.

ArenaNet announces planned server downtime for Guild Wars

Last year, Massively took a look at the top five features that make Guild Wars a great game. The first thing on the list was a near-total absence of server downtime. In the five-plus years the game has been around, incidents of server downtime are practically nonexistent.

For this reason, Guild Wars players were surprised to see an announcement of planned server downtime: “On Tuesday, August 10th, we will be moving the Guild Wars live database to a new data center. This will require a temporary interruption in service beginning at 12:01AM Pacific time on that date. Service may be suspended for up to 24 hours, although we will do everything we can to expedite the process. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this rare interruption!”

The fact that it’s such an unusual occurrence will likely prevent it from being a frustrating one, and players should be back in Tyria in under 24 hours.
