Four ArenaNet team members joining Undead Labs

In all the excitement over the Guild Wars 2 MMO manifesto, a quiet announcement on the Guild Wars wiki was very nearly lost in the shuffle, but it gained the attention of some sharp-eyed fans.

ArenaNet founder Mike O’Brien put a post on his wiki talk page entitled “Departures,” and bid farewell to four members of the ArenaNet team. Design Director James Phinney is leaving ArenaNet to join his former colleague Jeff Strain over at Undead Labs, and he’s not going alone.

Joining him are designer Richard Foge, as well as artists Scott Albaugh and Doug Williams. It’s been very quiet on the Undead Labs front for a while now, so this may signal the beginning of some progress on the zombie front.

As for ArenaNet? “Of course we’re disappointed to see them go, but I also know these guys are each individually huge zombie fans and are going to work on a zombie game, so I’m excited for their opportunity and wish them all the best,” says Mike.

We at Massively join him in wishing the group the best of luck in their new venture.

Linsey Murdock stepping down from ArenaNet Live Team

If you’re a Guild Wars fan, the Live Team is a group you’re probably very familiar with. They’re the main minds behind Guild Wars, the primary development team.

Linsey Murdock has been the Live Team’s leader for quite a while, so it was a bit of a surprise when she announced today that she is stepping down from the position. She’ll be passing the torch to designer John Stumme, and they each took a little bit of time to say a few words on the change.

Don’t wave goodbye to Linsey just yet, she’s not leaving ArenaNet. She’ll be taking a different position within the company instead. If you want to know what it is, you’ll have to wait a bit, says Linsey — she can’t talk about it quite yet.

Check out the ArenaNet blog to see what John and Linsey have to say about the switch.

Allods Online team defends patch 1.1 changes

Typically, a new content patch in an MMO is an exciting time, but for the folks over at Allods Online, it’s been a bumpy road, to say the least. With changes to the game, including a death penalty that causes items to become cursed with negative stats, players have been crying foul over the focus on cash shop items to overcome penalties. Specifically, Holy Charms, Incense, and Scrolls of Purification are highly desired by the playerbase, who see them as a necessity to level. Unfortunately, all of these items are cash shop only, forcing players to either fork over money or purchase them on the auction house for very high markups.

Due to the widespread complaints, the Allods Online team posted a response to the latest controversy that’s hit this free-to-play title. In the article, the team defends the changes and takes the position that cash shop purchases are not required to experience the full game: “We want to assure you that the game has not become Pay-to-Play or Pay-to-Win. At the core of Allods you can still enjoy the game without ever having to worry about spending money. Yes, Holy Charms, Incense, and Scrolls of Purification are only offered through the Item Shop, but they can be purchased from other players and the auction house.”

The response concludes by saying that patch 1.1 is the framework for future patches, and the Allods Online team has a long-term view of the MMO’s goals and objectives. Read the full response and let us know what you think!

Square Enix and feelplus team up on ‘Moon Diver’ for XBLA

Andriasang reports that Square Enix has pulled back the curtain obscuring the identity of its next project: a 2D action game called Moon Diver, coming this year to the Japanese Xbox Live Arcade. The title, which will be developed by Lost Odyssey and Ninety-Nine Nights 2 creator feelplus, pits four-player teams of ninjas — presumably moon ninjas, which we all know to be the coolest type of ninjas — against waves of monsters in an attempt to protect a post-apocalyptic Earth.

We still have so many questions: Is it coming to America? Can we see some screenshots? Are we expected to dive into or off of the moon? We suppose our curiosity will have to be sated by these slim, slim details for now. We’ll try pestering Square Enix for answers to these pressing questions at E3.

Blur trailer and screens highlight Team Race, Team Motor Mash modes

In the latest trailer for Blur, lead designer Gareth Wilson takes us for a lap around the upcoming racer’s bevy of team events. First, Wilson breaks down some tactics in Team Race, your run-of-the-mill us-vs-them race mode, in which teams duke it out on the track. Here, players can swap mods and lend assistance in a variety of ways — all in an effort to finish the race in the best position possible, thus earning more points than the enemy team.

The second portion of the trailer focuses on Team Motor Mash, another points-based team mode in which points aren’t simply earned through pole position, but rather through the judicious application of power-ups. Players can also earn points by smashing into rival drivers, giving this mode a Destruction Derby-like feel.

Aside from the new trailer, we’ve also got some new screens for you to check out in the gallery below. Blur races to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on May 25.
