Cataclysm starting zone preview footage

The WoW.com crew has been hard at work on full walkthroughs of the worgen and goblin starting experiences in the Cataclysm beta, and in the process we’ve built up a few videos that we simply don’t want to sit on any longer. You’ll see these videos in our guides as planned, so consider this a sneak preview. Obviously almost every single one of these videos is heavy with Cataclysm spoilers. Don’t want to be spoiled? Don’t watch.

Embedded above is the quest The Great Bank Heist. You can head over to our YouTube channel (or click the links below) to see:

Goblin Starting Zone

We’ve already said it a few times since the beta started, but we do strongly recommend subscribing to our YouTube channel. While most of the videos that are uploaded there will find their way here eventually, subscribing is a good way to get a sneak peek at upcoming features … and catch the few videos that don’t make it to our front page.

First Look And Exclusive Footage Of Hard Corps: Uprising

Contra: Hard Corps is my near-favorite Contra game of all time — a close second to the original game, which wins out mainly due to my fond nostalgia of playing that NES classic as a kid. What I love so much about Contra: Hard Corps, though, is that it builds on the great Contra gameplay of the first few games, and basically attempts to take everything to the max — giving you multiple characters to choose from, multiple weapons to use at any time, and multiple paths and endings to shoot your way through. That, and some of the absolute greatest boss battles to ever grace a gaming screen. Unfortunately, in the U.S. at least, where Konami removed the player’s life bar, the game was brutally difficult — far too difficult for most, actually. And because of that, few gamers actually were able to experience its brilliance. An utter shame, as it offers what I consider to be the pinnacle of Contra gameplay in later stages. Because of that, Hard Corps often gets overlooked when gamers discuss the series’ highlights — most of the attention usually gets placed on the original game, Super C for the NES, Contra 3 for the SNES, or even Contra: Shattered Soldier on the PS2.

So imagine my surprise when Konami announced it was creating a new game in the spirit of Contra: Hard Corps. Never mind that it’s also being developed by Arc System Works — the crew behind the terrific fighting games Guilty Gear and BlazBlue — but the fact that they are specifically modeling it after Hard Corps has my interest piqued.

Puzzle Quest 2 footage gets you from point A to point B

Yes, we know you’re upset that Puzzle Quest 2’s completely addictive gem-swapping sessions will be interrupted by primitive world traversal — why can’t we just bounce from fight to fight on an overworld map like civilized humans? Try not to get your knickers in a twist; based on the trailer above, it doesn’t look like traveling between levels will be too taxing of an ordeal. Especially if you just teleport to where you’re headed, which may actually reduce the amount of downtime between brawls. Now that’s more like it.

Check out the trailer to see Puzzle Quest 2’s exploration in action, and to get a quick glimpse of the game that’s going to devour our free time next month.

Side-scrolling Mario Galaxy 2 footage is delightful

Amongst all gamers of a certain age, there exists a very special, very sensitive part of the brain. The particular section is flooded with pleasure-inducing chemicals upon seeing Mario jump on (and subsequently flatten!) a Goomba. This effect is actually doubled when seen in a 2D context, so we have to append the latest Super Mario Galaxy 2 video with a warning: Prepare your pleasure centers, this one is a doozy. If you think you can handle it, watch the video after the break.

Leaked Sonic 4 mine cart footage is all yours

Adding to last week’s leaked footage of Sonic 4’s Splash Hill Zone is a new clip (embedded after the break) from the downloadable game’s Lost Labyrinth Zone. There’s more to be seen at the source, but we singled out one clip in particular because it served as the best evidence that Sonic 4 really is drawing a lot of inspiration from the 16-bit era — after all, how else would you explain a mine cart level? (In case you’d forgotten, they were outlawed by a U.N. resolution passed in 1998.)

So hey, if some random people on the internet can get their hands on Sonic 4, it shouldn’t be too long before we can, too. Right?

[Thanks RPK!]

Peace Walking with friends in co-op Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker footage

We quite like Kojima Productions’ tactic for promoting Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: long clips of uninterrupted gameplay footage.

In the latest video, a trio of Snakes, along with some soldiers, team up to take on — a helicopter. Or, if you prefer Metal Gear Solid 3 naming conventions, The Helicopter. One Snake demonstrates how to look tough while wearing pink fatigues — by CQC-ing and then kidnapping four soldiers in rapid succession. And we witness the splendor of the Ambulance Box. Remember when we thought of Metal Gear games as realistic military simulations? You know, right before Metal Gear Solid came out.

Dead Space 2 thrusts gameplay footage at PAX audiences

Dead Space 2 producer Steve Papoutsis promised that Visceral’s survival horror sequel would have a greater emphasis on action. Well, they weren’t kidding. At their live-streamed PAX panel, the Visceral team showed off thirty seconds of footage of the upcoming game, and “action-packed” would be a pretty appropriate way of describing it.

The blurry off-screen footage captured from the show’s Ustream may not be the best look at the quality of Dead Space 2’s graphics, but it gives a good idea of what to expect from Issac Clark’s new adventure. Rushing through a moving train, Issac can be seen activating a jet pack in a scene that looks like it should be from Dark Void The Rocketeer. Watch it after the break.
