Recently we spotted an interesting post from Bill Roper, Design Director for Cryptic Studios‘ MMO Champions Online. On his Facebook page he showed a slightly blurry picture of a developers booth with the simple caption “GDC 2010: The developers of our Facebook Game.” Sure enough you can now play a Mafia Wars style Facebook game while wearing your tightest spandex! It runs in your browser and hooks up to your Facebook account so that you can choose to announce level ups and achievements. You can also invite friends to form a superteam, customize your secret base and even attack other players.

Developer Lolapps claims to have “over 40 million active users per month, and has the largest network of social games and applications on Facebook.” It looks like they know what they are doing, so it is definitely worth a look. Head over now, make your hero and get to stopping crime!

The Wii doesn’t often fall off its perch atop the console crowd, and when it does it’s worth noting. The Wii slipped below the Xbox 360 this month, though the reasons aren’t easy to identify. None of the consoles have seen price drops, so this seems more of a natural equalizing of the consoles than we’ve seen in months past. The last time the Wii slipped below another console was September of 2009, due to the PS3 price drop and launch of the Slim. The last time the 360 topped the Wii was September of 2007, during the Halo 3 launch. Now that the three are on par without any particular mitigating factors, we may see them swapping spots for a while.

Year-over-year sales were down, though the consoles saw moderate gains from January of this year. Still, all of the hardware manufacturers have reason to celebrate this month. The PlayStation 3 sales are up 30%, the 360 is on top of the console market, and Nintendo always has its trusty DS to sell like hotcakes.

BioShock 2 seems to have had something to do with the boost, with the Xbox 360 version topping the software charts (and the PS3 version absent from the top ten). Other notable software milestones: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the third best-selling game of all time, and Just Dance seems to have made a better pact with Satan than even Dante’s Inferno did. During an interview at the 2010 Game Developers Conference, THQ executive VP of Core Games Danny Bilson told Joystiq that market research creates “bland” titles, citing it is not a process his group is willing to utilize for future development. “We don’t do research to find out what people want to play. If you need to do that kind of research you must not be playing games yourself,” Bilson said, noting that research and overusing focus tests can “misguide creative forces.”

According to Bilson, his core group at THQ is ruled by creating “excellent” titles. Put simply, Bilson says he will not ship a game if it’s not “really good” — noting that doing otherwise will make it impossible for him to “sleep at night.” As an example of this process, Bilson noted his decision to push Darksiders from a 2009 release into the early-2010 calendar in order to ensure the game was of high quality. (Darksiders currently holds an average Metacritic rating of 83.)

“Inspiration comes from one place and research and focus testing will usually destroy it. It will usually create ‘bland’ and create something for everyone and really nothing for anyone,” he said, praising the idea that publishers should not ship a game until it’s ready. “If my teams make really good games, in the long run, that’s what people relate to. They’re not buying advertising, they’re not buying Wall Street nonsense. They’re buying what’s on that disc.”

Celestial steeds and more toys aren’t the only new things coming in patch 3.3.3! With the new content also comes a variety of new music. Accompanying the trolls in Operation Echo Isles will be an epic score tailored to the event, whether the calm before combat, the thick of the battle, or the climax of the fight, the music will get you in the mood for the voodoo.

Also uncovered was a track centered around the Ruby Sanctum. Not to be outdone by the trolls, the Red Dragonflight has made a strong showing with spooky music all their own.
