New Battle of the Immortals gameplay trailer

Perfect World Entertainment’s upcoming PvP focused hack-n-slash MMO Battle of the Immortals now has a gameplay trailer showing off its goods. You’re probably wondering whether or not this game is up your alley. Well, this video will probably help answer most of that question for you.

Did we mention the game will have demonic hot rod mounts as well as kung-fu pandas and ninja master turtles as pets? Don’t get too worked up just yet, because the closed beta isn’t coming until mid-April. We’re sure to have more videos and information about Battle of the Immortals leading up to the beta process, though. So if your interest is piqued, at least you’ll be able to maintain that insatiable lust for knowledge.

Find the rather lengthy gameplay trailer after the break.

Disney Wants Epic Mickey to Reach “Nintendo Levels” of Quality

Epic Mickey

Why do Nintendo games, on average, sell so much better than third-party games on the Wii? There are probably a number of ways to answer that question, but according to Disney Interactive Studios executive VP and general manager Graham Hopper, it’s about giving games the time and care they need to reach the “Nintendo level” of quality — and they intend to do so with Epic Mickey.

“I think we’ve tried to learn from the things Nintendo does well,” Hopper said in an interview with Gamasutra. “One of the things that Nintendo does on their own platforms is they give their projects the time and appropriate resources to be successful, and they iterate until they get there. And I think we’re doing the same with Epic Mickey, giving it the time and resources to be successful.”

That, Hopper hopes, will lead to better success than many third parties find on Wii. “I’ll tell you that I don’t think all other third parties are approaching the Wii in the same way. If there’s a third-party game that I think has potential to be as successful on the Wii to Nintendo levels, I’d like to think it’s Disney Epic Mickey. We’re following the same playbook.”

Seniors can be tricked into exercising with video games, study might suggest

It doesn’t take a research grant to figure out that exercise — heck, just walking around the block once a day — can have a dramatic effect on a person’s well-being. The problem is that so-called “older adults,” who are particularly prone to a mild but no less debilitating depression known as subsyndromal depression (SSD), are really just too bummed out to do much of anything. Here’s where the grant money comes in: Dilip V. Jeste, MD, and his team of researches at UCSD gathered up 19 seniors diagnosed with SSD and had each of them play Wii Sports for 35 minutes, three times a week.

“The study suggests encouraging results from the use of the exergames,” Dr. Jeste reports. “More than one-third of the participants had a 50-percent or greater reduction of depressive symptoms.” Additionally, most participants claimed that learning to to play those darned vidja games was actually pretty easy — even enjoyable. Uh-oh. Red flag!

You see, had Dr. Jeste continued his study, he might have found that his guinea pigs would soon discover that Wii Sports can easily be played with the slightest flicks of the wrist and, ah yes, it is nice to just sit back on the couch again, but, oh boy, this game is really getting boring, so let me just get on the dag blasted google and see what — here we go — “the best videogame right now,” okay, the yahoo’s answer says: World of Warcraft. Warcraft, eh? That certainly sounds better than bowling. Couldn’t hurt to give it a quick gander … click.

Swag Sunday: BioSwag!

When you come right down to it, genetic engineering is about the only shot humans are going to have at developing real super powers. Which is why BioShock and BioShock 2 are more than just stories about some nifty underwater city gone wrong. When you have people that can move objects with their minds or blast fire from their hands and then stick them in a gorgeous dystopia, that’s when you’ve got a story.

So what better way to celebrate that world than by bringing it into our own? With that in mind, we’re offering up a mess of BioShock swag: one BioShock “Don’t Wait! Incinerate!” women’s shirt (size medium), one BioShock 2 Butterfly Hands men’s shirt (size small), two different BioShock lithographs, and one extremely cool, handmade Splicer mask. Check out the prizes in the gallery below, and read the rules to enter.

  • Leave a comment telling us what plasmid power you’d want. Feel free to make up your own.
  • You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec, mostly due to our exclusion from a “statut particulier” status in Canada).
  • Limit 1 entry per person per day.
  • This entry period ends at 7:01PM ET on Monday, March 1.
  • At that time, we’ll randomly select one winner to receive one BioShock 2 men’s butterfly shirt, size small (ARV $10), one BioShock 2 women’s “Incinerate!” shirt, size medium (ARV $10), two BioShock lithographs (ARV $15 each), and one handmade Splicer mask (ARV $50).
  • For a list of complete rules, click here.

What is Joyswag? Since we don’t keep the games and merchandise we receive for review or promotional purposes, it becomes “Joyswag,” which is passed along to our readers. Please note that Joyswag may be in “used” condition. For more info on our policy, click here.

The Light and How to Swing It: Your group is on fire

Every Sunday, Chase Christian of The Light and How to Swing It invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. This week, we examine how to handle situations where your entire party is taking serious damage and there’s nothing you can do about it (or is there?).

I don’t know about you, but I’ve woken up in the middle of the night, on more than one occasion, from a terrible nightmare. I’m not talking about the Emerald Nightmare, you’ll have to read Stormrage or talk to some tree-hugging druid if you want to hear about that. I’m referring to something similar to Argent Confessor Paletress’ Confess attack; nightmares with a far more sinister source: memories of failed encounters from the past.

My guild’s first attempt on the Twin Val’kyr has caused me more sleepless nights than any other so far. It was early in the week of their release, and so nobody in the raid had ever seen the Twins before. With no prior knowledge, we pulled the bosses blindly. My co-healer, a resto shaman, disconnected immediately due to an unknown problem. Suddenly I was faced with 10 targets all taking damage from a passive AoE aura, two tanks that were being hit pretty decently themselves, and random DPS in the group losing large chunks of their life at what seemed to be random times as balls of energy bounced around the room. This is my nightmare: the entire raid is on fire at once, and I’m all alone.

PSN is down, some titles experiencing game-crashing errors [update]

A wide rash of game-crashing errors is spreading among the PS3-owning community at the moment, most of which can be chalked up to a 8001050F error code. This has led to a variety of unfortunate side-effects for those affected, including corrupted trophy information and an inability to access the PSN. When combined, those two issues prevent players from launching certain games, such as Heavy Rain, without being kicked back to the XMB.

We’ve contacted Sony to find out what’s causing the issue, and when we can expect to get back to chasing down the Origami Killer. He might just be able to make a clean getaway while we suffer through this downtime.

Update: Sony has acknowledged the issue, and is “looking into it.” We’ve yet to hear an official word on what the problem is, though it seems to be a bit larger than just the PSN. Owners of PS3 Phats are reporting that the date on their console has reverted to 12/31/1999, which is likely the cause of the data-corrupting errors. Some Phat-owners have reported receiving the errors while their console was offline, which is upsetting, to say the least. We’ll let you know when we hear official word from Sony.
