Extreme Gaming Laptops – When Is A Laptop Not A Laptop?

Titus Hoskins asked:

Extreme gaming laptops are reaching new benchmarks to
give you the ultimate gaming experience. These ever
increasing powerful machines are offering you better
performances from ever decreasing packages. Gaming laptops
are now reaching standards usually associated with high
end Desktop PCs.

But at some point even the most dedicated gamer has to
ask: when is a laptop not a laptop?

If you take the literal meaning of the word, you should be
able to fit or sit a laptop comfortably on your lap for an
extended period of time. Portability should also be another
defining feature; you should be able to easily carry your
laptop around with you wherever you go. Otherwise, why not
just buy a Desktop PC instead of a laptop?

The long standing argument has been power or performance;
you can get higher performance out of a Desktop PC
than you can get from any laptop. Maybe so, but the gap
is narrowing quickly.

Recent extreme gaming laptops are offering some very
impressive specs. Just take for example, the new Xtreme
SL8 from Rock, (a UK laptop manufacturer) and you will
see that stacking has taken on a whole new meaning.

The Xtreme SL8 is one heck of a mean-machine with ultimate
raw stacking power with Four Intel Core 2 processor cores,
Two NVIDIA 8800M GTX SLi graphics cards and Three 7200rpm
SATA hard drives. This gaming machine can crunch numbers
and offer top mobile performance benchmarks. It might even
give the old PC some serious laptop envy!

This machine supports up to 4GB DDR2 RAM (available up
to 800MHz) with DX10 graphics. Plus, you have all the high
end features such as HD-DVD Writer combo drive, TV Tuner,
Hi-res 17″ WUXGA X-Glass (1920×1200) Display, Webcam, 7.1
Surround Sound Output with 4 speakers…

However all this stacking power and fully loaded features
takes up a lot of space. The Xtreme SL8 weights in at a
little under 12 pounds (5.3 kg) and around 15.5 inches
(394) mm by 12 inches (299 mm). At 2 and half inches thick
this is not your Apple Air.

Nor is it trying to be, but some comparisons has to be made
if we’re classifying both of these computing machines as
laptops. The Apple Air is 3 pounds (1.36 kg) and under an
inch thick (1.94 cm) so it truly is a portable laptop with
5 hours of battery life. This is a long way removed from
the XSL8’s massive credentials and massive weight, but so
too is the distance between the performances offered by the
respective laptops.

These two mobile computers were designed for two completely
different purposes; one for raw gaming power and the other
for the ultimate in portability. Each has their respective
customers but can both of them be called a laptop?

Perhaps, but the Xtreme SL8 is more or less a neatly
trimmed down packaged Desktop. Not that there is anything
wrong with that as long as you understand what you’re
getting when you’re buying one; you won’t be sitting with
this baby on your lap for long periods or lugging it around
over long distances.

For those of us studying laptop designs (there are such
creatures in the world unfortunately) over a long period
of time, you can’t help but notice how much power and
performance can now be crammed into an ever shrinking
package. Nor can you ignore the trend that Desktop PCs
are looking more and more like laptops, especially the
monitors.

Even the trademark Desktop Tower is getting slimmer and
more streamlined; there will probably come a time with
all the tower components will evolve into such small
compact entities, calling it a tower will be a gross
exaggeration.

One can plainly see, the Desktop PC days are numbered,
especially when you consider we have an inherent need
to make everything smaller and more compact. Besides
why take up all that space when you can get the same
performance in a smaller package. This is another
example where big may not necessarily be better.

The line between what is a Laptop and what is a Desktop
computer will continue to be blurred as computer makers
keep offering up what the consumer wants. At some point
in the not too distance future the two products will
probably converge into a light portable package that
can be carried anywhere. Why not just call everything
a Mobile Computer and be done with it.

But for now, gaming enthusiasts will still have a choice
when buying their ultimate gaming machine: a Desktop
PC or a Laptop such as the Xtreme SL8. However, calling
the last one a laptop is still stretching the imagination
to its limits, no matter how you define it.

How to Buy PC Games

Sophie Archer asked:

While many are limited to the world of console gaming, PC games brings a new level of gaming experience. It can be a bit more work initially, but the rewards are well worth it. Here are some guidelines for buying PC games.

1. What kind of games you like to play? Do you like adventure games? Puzzle games? First person shooters? At one time, the first-person shooter is confined almost exclusively to the PC! It is important to analyze their likes and dislikes, so that you can target certain games in the field of PC gaming. If you’re not sure what you like, you can (of course) to jump right in and any sample of titles seem interesting to you, but if you have your sights set on one gender, it will be easier to identify the best titles of this genre and make sure your computer can handle them.

2. What are the specifications of your computer? The most frustrating part of playing games on PC for the new field is to make sure that the computer that will play games they can handle. When shopping for new PC games, it is important to know the following about your computer:

* The amount of free space on your hard drive (5GBs free will of almost all PC game)

* Amount of RAM (512 MB is enough for most games)

* The speed of the processor (2GHz is at the top and be responsible for most games)

* Video / graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce series is compatible with most games)

* Operating system (Windows XP is becoming the norm; Windows is generally more compatible with Macintosh PC games.)

For some games, can do less than what appears on the list, but the former will handle most new games. In most PC games, there will be a sticker on the back of the box specifies that the “minimum system requirements.” The least possible to specify values for all four of the above pieces of information that are needed to play the game in question.

When you buy PC games, the next question is also important: Are you ready to upgrade your computer? Upgrading the RAM, for example, can cost a couple hundred dollars, but the ability for gaming (and the ease with the user will be able to complete other computing tasks) will be greatly expanded. If you are unwilling to improve, then you will see a point in the game to PC long after many of the new games are not playable on the computer.

3. Do you have an Internet connection? If you have an Internet connection (in particular, a high-speed connection), then a new world of PC games will be open for you: Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games (MMORPG ). These are the games that work like RPG, but can you play with millions of people around the world via an Internet connection. Popular examples of this genre is EverQuest (EQ) and World of Warcraft (WoW).

4. Choose a game to suit your needs. Choose a game that falls within your price range ($ 60 is about tops the PC games of today), conforms to the specifications of your computer, and hopes to appeal to you. Buy the game, take home, install and play. If you have problems, please contact the game support.

Gaming For Learning

Galvin Gale asked:

Many years ago when the internet was still at its nascent stage, people thought that it would have a limited positive impact on the users. Apart from exchanging mails and important files, there was hardly any other utility that could be associated with the internet. Adding to that there were fears of virus attacks and other potential damages. These fears were not based on unfounded facts as with the turn of the century, people became more aware of the various negative effects of the Internet. Soon, several voices were raised by people who found internet as a safe haven for intruders, terrorists, hackers and cyber criminals.

A lot of eyebrows were also raised on the issue whether the internet is safe for children. However, recent changes, developments and innovations have proved that not only is the internet safe for children but is also a good medium of entertainment and learning.

Modern education system which is largely based upon adoption of modern teaching tools and techniques calls for learning and enlightenment. Instead of focusing on archaic teaching methods, this new approach emphasises on making learning fun. To cash in on this new trend and make education as fun as games, many online gaming companies have come up with interesting online games that seek to educate and entertain young learners.

In this exclusive range of online games, young users, mostly in the age group of 5-12 years learn new lessons in a fun way. Interestingly, learning becomes fun in this method as the learner does not even realise that he is learning something new. This decodes a lot of complicated theoretical problems and clears the concepts in a much easier manner. This explains the growing popularity of several niche gaming products that are designed to make the young minds sharper and smarter. So, for those who struggle with maths, there are several jigsaw puzzles, riddles and other forms of online games that enable them to practice sums on a regular basis.

A majority of these games are conceptualised by experts from various streams and disciplines. Hence, these online games have proven to be extremely effective in nurturing young minds.

There are several gaming sites where students not only get to participate in contests and other informative activities but also discuss and sort out their doubts with experts. Some of these online games sites have a discussion forum featuring an expert who stay online and help students with their problems. This takes gaming to an entirely new level as students not only play games but also learn new chapters in the most informal way.

In some of these games that allow multiple players to participate, young players compete with fellow players and score points in such games. This helps them in becoming competitive yet curious about the various subjects they study on a daily basis.

The success of these gaming sites is evident from the fact that an increasing number of young gamers are scoring better and achieving higher grades at school. As a result, many teachers are also recommending these mediums.

Dustin Casano asked:

Let’s face it, in today’s PC gaming world ‘tricking’ out your computer is becoming easier and easier. Thanks to sites like Tigerdirect.com, you can get the best bang possible without having to empty your bank account. People are always bragging during those hours of raiding or other aspects of MMO gaming about their computer and the sweet ram it has, or the Duo core processors, the latest Nvidia chips they have hooked up, etc.

Yet you never hear of the one true hero of online gaming, the keyboard. The keeper of your hotkeys, the reason your arcane missiles come rocketing out in record time to gank the lowbie heading down the map, or the reason you won that arena match in the last second. While the system specs of your pc may eliminate that awful gaming lag, or your mouse maybe what has you moving at record speeds during your game, ultimately the keyboard is your bread and butter to gaming success.

So, from one avid MMO gamer to another, let me introduce to you the Saitek Cyborg Gaming Keyboard. This keyboard has truly taken it to the next level in pc online gaming. Xbox Remains A High Demand Gaming Machine

Bruno Auger asked:

The Xbox is one of the most familiar console video gaming devices on the market. Bill Gates is rumored to have delayed its release for several years to include every bell and whistle of available technology to make it the ultimate gaming machine and one that everyone would want. Computers and the internet have made online gaming more attractive than console games to many game fans, so something was needed to boost the console concept. It was finally marketed late in 2001.

The console contains a basic computer chip and has multiple options for AV connections. It is compatible with standard AV cable, the RF connecter, TOSLINK audio and S-Video, SCART, and High Definition devices. The Xbox connect to Ethernet cable to a modem or router or as a wireless link. It can interface with a PC which greatly expands gaming potential and also has music capability as a player, a mixer or for karaoke. Accessories make it usable as a DVD player as well.

The controllers are an amazing collection of options and functions for Xbox. Far from the simple joystick and couple of buttons of the early console games, this controller looks more like the dashboard of a small plane. It comes in alternate models with two analog control sticks, a directional touch pad, six action buttons, Back and Start buttons, and slots for accessories. There’s even a memory card slot that allows games to be stored for later play.

Some games disable the memory card function to prevent cheating, but of course some Xbox addicts find hacks to get around some of the protections. One of the huge draws is the availability of an online multiplayer gaming service that lets a gamer play with anyone else who owns this console anywhere in the world. Instead of competing with games online, they just joined in.

There has been controversy over pricing for this game, with Europe complain that they were being overcharged as much as 100% over the US prices, and new version releases also have had inflated prices. Other complaints have centered on the content and violence of individual game releases. This also has been the same for other brands of similar game consoles.

Purchasing an Xbox provides an incredible range of entertainment possibilities for children and adults. Prices have become much lower, and games themselves are often traded or sold used at a great discount. It remains a much desired holiday or birthday gift and many homes have more than one.

Playing PC Games Online

Ronald Firquain asked:

Even though the video game consoles of today have taken over all the old systems the computer games of today are still some of the number one rated on any system. It is fortunate that Microsoft has issued the compatibility patch for new generation operating system Windows Vista; this patch could fix the compatibility problems that encounter in Windows Vista system. Once you can accept this fact, you may be satisfied anyway with the fact that your TV can still be a pretty good alternative type of flat screen monitor and can show you video images like those from movies anyway. Downloading through my gaming blog and get to enjoy and anytime you want, without limits and restrictions. Always seek advice and tips by checking out forums using the official Websites. Downloading them online and automatically be redirected to a site where you can update.

When you are sure your applications would be appropriate and suited. If your settings are not suited, you surely would encounter problems when you download online. If you would need to download on the Internet, it would be advisable if you would take time to consider the following simple guidelines. You surely would find numerous resources that would be of great help to you. Basically, for a one time fee, you can download from these sites without having to worry about spy ware, ad ware or computer infections. Another problem that happens to people who download at free sites is that some of the files are not really full version. There are troubles faced by many gamers today at these free sites. Most of these databases are gigantic with millions of games, movies and even music files.

Like playing PC games online, it gives a great sense of victory when I have beaten others. The video display is excellent and can turn up to 85 frames a second. Now not any laptop will perform good enough because some have very high graphics and need plenty of processor speed. And are specially built without slowing down. The video card that is inside of your computer is responsible for what you are seeing on your monitor right now. And have been released as free downloads by their respective publisher, developer, or creator. Here are some of the reasons on demand are going to change the way most of us play the latest video and audio. There is more variety and options for than any other systems. And being able to save a mission before coming back to it, repeating it over and over again until you got good enough to pass the stage?

It is a trend named brand entertainment which promotes the production of products based on novels, movies or even songs. If by some chance they are lacking a particular game, you can easily hop online and find a variety of websites that sell the latest game at great prices. Are you searching high and low for the latest to entertain you? Whether you are in search of X-Box, Play station, you will find them all at Best Buy. I like to look through the island of Best Buy for PS2. Console or computer game are those that are played on a television set with a converter box, on the other hand are loaded into and booted up much like any other software; and both share common origin in electronic arcade games. Ten years ago, the total amount spent on console and PC games tighter was $5.8 billion. You can see in the news, in your pc games and in toy models.

Gaming Laptops – Is it a Matter of Style Over Performance?

Titus Hoskins asked:

Years ago when gaming laptops first hit the market many serious gamers laughed at the whole notion of using a laptop for gaming. These first gaming laptops simply were not up to the power and performance of a gaming PC. No contest. A desktop computer simply gave you higher performance than a gaming laptop.

While that last statement is still probably true, the gap in performance has narrowed significantly in recent years. Laptops have increased in performance with the introduction of more powerful mobile dual processors or even quad processors enhanced with dual graphics cards via SLI technology.

As we go into fifth and sixth generation laptop technologies and platforms… the performance gap will soon be wiped out. Especially when you consider some gaming laptop specialists are actually giving you desktop components in a laptop. Same performance as a desktop only packaged in a laptop. However, calling these laptops is a bit of a stretch because you won’t be sitting with these heavy mutant creatures on your lap for any long periods of time.

Regardless, laptop specialists like Alienware, Sager and Rock in the UK, are turning out these computing monsters that can easily rival the gaming desktop PC. The only thing more shocking than all that raw power and performance is the price tag. You do have to pay a hefty price for all that style and performance.

The major drawback or disadvantage of going with a gaming laptop — there’s little room for upgrading. With a gaming PC, you can always upgrade to the latest technologies because there are usually slots open and space to expand… you can even upgrade to a larger monitor if you like.

However, with the gaming laptop the only things you can realistically upgrade are the RAM (memory) and the hard drive. In a gaming laptop everything is so compact and reduced in size to fit into such a small package, there’s little space for upgrading. Many serious gamers dismiss owning a gaming laptop for this very reason.

The other major reason is price since you can get more power and performance in a gaming desktop PC for a cheaper price than going with a laptop. Again, the gap is closing but it’s still no contest. While laptop prices are steadily falling, you can still get a better gaming rig at a lower price if you go the PC route. In addition, larger monitors are now at 24 or 25 inches on some desktop systems so laptops can’t compete with the display visuals if bigger is your thing.

Then the only other question that has to be asked:

Why are gaming laptops so bloody popular?

Mainly because of the “Cool” factor. Don’t laugh, these gaming rigs, especially those high priced monsters, are the essence of cool. They look spectacular and in our very shallow world looks do count. Just like many people who buy high performance sports cars more for the looks rather than for the performance; it is a matter of style over performance for them.

Then there is still the portability factor since laptops, even those 10 or 12 pound monsters, are still more mobile than a bulky PC Tower and Monitor. You can take all that “cool” style and design along with you, no matter where you go. Simply put, even though batter life is next to nil, a gaming laptop is mobile. You can take it with you and show it off.

So is it a matter of style over performance?

Not really, looks may be one factor why gaming laptops are so popular but without the high performance and extreme computing power, these systems would be dead in the water. For in the end, where gaming is concerned, performance is still king. Gaming laptops get the job done, perhaps not as cheaply as their desktop rivals, but you can usually play the latest games on these pimped-out monsters.

In the end, gamers want the performance first and the looks are secondary. But they will probably still ’show-off’ all that style nonetheless, to friends and to other gamers. Even so, with gaming laptops, it is more a matter of performance over style.

The great thing about today’s gaming laptops, you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. If you can afford the hefty price tag, you can have all that style plus all the performance you need, neatly packaged in your own gaming laptop.

Best PC Racing Game

Adi Moga asked:

When talking about best PC racing game, there’s always a war of words. You don’t even need two people to have a fight, because it’s very hard for one to decide what’s the best PC racing game yet. For example, Burnout Paradise PC is the best one I can think of now, but when looking back, things may change a bit… so let’s take a look at the history of PC gaming for a while, shall we?

Contrary to the popular belief, you don’t need real locations and vehicles to get a good racing game going. In fact, we can see anything from completely Sci-Fi settings to real world places and vehicles, and that includes land, air, and sea vehicles(there are only a few boats racing games I’ve played, but they were awesome!).

One of the big problems nowadays is that arcade-style games are becoming more and more popular, leaving the ******** racing sims to a few fans. This could be easily explained by the early age most game consumers get a PC, when compared to what happened 15 or 20 years ago.

The history of computer racing starts in 1982, with Namco’s game Pole Position, followed by a bunch of others, but probably the best racing games I’ve played for a while were these: Formula One Grand Prix, Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge, and the first NASCAR Racing game, developed back in 1994. Jumping from ******** driving sims to full arcade games, best PC racing game crown jumped from a title to another, and there are dozens of games worth being mentioned here.

In the beginning, I named Burnout Paradise PC as an example, but who can forget the first Need for Speed games, the Colin McRae Rally series, the two Official WTCC games, RACE and RACE 07, or those good old Screamer racing games?

Considering that great racing games like Gran Turismo are staying away from the PC world, some may claim that PC racing games are going down, and some titles released lately may confirm this idea. The good part is that, as far as Microsoft Windows keeps going on, we’ll have a lot of PC racing games around, and some of them show that the way of the future is a realistic handling and damage model with arcade elements and fictional cars(licensing fees, you know…) that don’t fly or float, in most cases.

On the other hand, we could also have a best PC racing game popping out of nowhere that allows you to race around the moon in jumping rovers, who can tell? The possibilities are endless, and the good part of the crisis we’re in is that more people are willing to do anything but think about it, and what’s better than gaming around? After all, gaming has no age, you only need to be young at heart!
