Game Tester Jobs – Preparing For Your Interview

Hitoshi Jones asked:

Video game testing is the holy grail of all video gaming jobs. Full time game tester jobs are few and far between, but when one is found, it’s likely to be highly contested, sought by dozens of applicants, all qualified for the position. When interviewing for a position as an in-house video game tester, you’ll want to be fully prepared and ready for any questions they might throw at you.

Research

Full-time game testing is harder than many tout it to be. Not only are you responsible for daily to weekly builds of a game, with very carefully detailed note taking and repetitive replays through broken levels, but you’re likely to spend long hours meeting your deadlines, and a lot of that time writing up reports rather than playing video games.

For any video game tester jobs you apply for you’ll want to do a lot of research before you go to your interview. Know exactly what kind of games the company you’re applying for makes, what their budgets and development schedules are, and how many people they employ.

When they ask you questions about your availability and dedication you’ll be able to give specific answers regarding the hours and duties you’ll be stuck with.

Rehearsing

Like any job, you should be ready for any and all anticipated questions. If you feel like your video game testing interview might involve questions of which games you play and why, have good answers ready. Don’t offer the typical response you’d give your five buddies on a road trip, such as “I dig fighting games”.

Talk about the details in game design, and mechanics that draw you to that genre. It helps if you tailor this answer to the kinds of games the company you’re interviewing with makes. Also, you’ll want to be completely prepared for the actual work involved in this job. Rehearse answers to questions about details orientation.

Have examples ready of when you were exceptional at keeping track of a lot of small things at once. Don’t relate every question they ask back to video gaming. You’re applying for a game tester job, but it is still a job, with multiple duties.

During the Interview

Like any other interview, you need to look good, be prepared, and try your hardest to relax. Keep in mind that most game testing jobs are not extremely high paying, but you are still combating dozens of other interested applicants. Carefully balance your responses like any job interview, not speaking negatively of old jobs, but not dwelling on the video game aspect of your potential job.

The Job

Full time video game testing, as I’ve mentioned, is a hard job. It’s a great job for those truly interested in video games, but you will be playing the same game, in broken modes for weeks if not months, uncovering bugs, taking meticulous notes and getting revised editions with almost the same details weekly. It’s a great job for those in love with the industry though, so when you interview, make sure to follow all of the standard interview rules while keeping in mind the complexity of a game testing job.

How to Make PC Games More True to Life

Paul Bryan asked:

If you are anything like I am (and I bet you are) then you are a gaming junkie. Otherwise you would not be reading this, now would you? No, I’m not a psychic (nor have I ever played one on TV) but being like me you are interested in experience what it means to enjoy true lifelike gaming. As gamers we appreciate all that the programmers and publishers bring to us.

We do because they actually take the time to listen to us. We created the gaming culture and we are the ones that these companies are constantly sounding off to about gaming. What do we want to see? How do we want the new Halo game to play? What do you not like about this, that or the other controller? Companies that take our advice get publishing gold, those that do not wind up with Rumble Roses X. Nobody knows more about game than gamers.

If you think making these games seem more real or lifelike is some easy chore then you are sorely mistaken. It takes a lot of time, effort, money and a great many artists and designers to achieve something as lifelike gaming. These groups of creative individuals have been putting together tremendous storylines with beautiful graphics to put together some very engrossing games that draw us into them, making our subconscious minds pop and whir with anticipation.

There are very few games that can say they really got a gamer to immerse themselves into so fully as the makers of Majestic-12, a conspiracy puzzle game that would e-mail, call and fax you clues from whispered voices – awesome and creepy all at the same time.

Forget about games looking more real or stories being so engrossing they draw you into the storyline. There comes a time when a game has to evolve beyond visually appealing graphic or rich auditory cues. Moving away from the programming side of things the only thing that is left are peripherals.

Nintendo brought us one of the original light guns, the power glove and the power mat. These represented more advanced ways to play a game and immerse ourselves into it. Nintendo kept this ideal with the Wii making the entire system interactive. Harmonix gave us Rock Band and Guitar Hero so now we have microphone, drums and guitars. No matter how much more real games look they do not feel as real as they could and making games feel more real is what any game company should strive to do.

So how do you make a game FEEL real? The Gaming Vest, that is how. It is a technology fresher than your first wash of the week. The gaming vest closely resembles the type of thing that military and police wear that is loaded with empty sacks waiting to be filled with rapid air to give the ultimate feeling of being punched, kicked, stabbed, shot or even feel the G-Forces of your favorite air battle game.

Lifelike gaming is here people. The realism is surreal as you are running around in Unreal Tournament or Call of Duty getting shot at and feeling every strike. Nothing like the Wii and, unfortunately, the gaming vest is currently only available for use on PCs with a conversion kit forthcoming to use on your console.

Full PC Game Downloads – Try Before You Buy

Chris Robertson asked:

Video games are bigger than the movie industry these days and it’s about time we get some respect. It’s interesting to see how a game console like the PS3 can make or break a giant company like Sony or how important it is to Microsoft to see the Xbox 360 succeed. We’re even seeing ads and commercials in our games, a sure-fire sign that we’re being taken serious. Hey, they wouldn’t do it if we weren’t important to them. But that’s not what I want to talk about. What I set out to do is discuss PC game downloads.

The way I see it, the gaming scene pretty much divides into PC gaming and console gaming. Consoles are proprietary and the games come on CDs, DVDs or BlueRay discs. You can also buy PC games on discs and order them online or get them from a store, but I much prefer to download video games from online. I mean, most of us do have broadband Internet access, so why not download games directly?

Well, there are some potential pitfalls. For example, due to my reputation as a geek and computer guru, everyone seems to call me when his or her PC has a problem. Most often, the problem turns out to be a virus. Worm or Trojan infestation, and it’s usually because they download stuff from all sorts of dubious places. So don’t be stupid. Stay with a reputable vendor who won’t mess up your system!

Another problem with a lot of the online video games stores is that they don’t let you try before you buy. Or if they do, it’s so complicated that you give up in frustration. You should have to read a manual and reconfigure your computer just to play a demo.

Finally, with all the gazillion gaming sites and stores out there, I prefer just one place that has it all. That way I know where to go and I won’t have to remember URLs or have dozens of logins to all sorts of little sites. Give me one big site that has all the PC video games I need. Price is another issue, and it goes without saying that a bigger site usually has better prices.

What matters most to me, though, is that I can try the games. And by that I don’t mean just a video or a limited demo or some screen shots. I want to play the whole game. Now the vendors have to get paid, of course, and so the compromise is that you get to download the game by clicking on a button and then play for an hour. That makes sense. If it’s a small game and you get hooked, you can then decide if you want to keep it by paying. If it’s a big game, an hour gives you enough time to figure out if you want to really get into it. Sounds fair to me.

So don’t waste time searching for full PC games downloads in all the wrong places. The site I am using has probably the largest and deepest video game library out there, and there are many hundreds of titles I can download and try. It has a patented one-click download technology that couldn’t be simpler. I am hooked.

How To Stream Audio And Video From PC To PSP

Jordan Michael asked:

The PSP or the Playstation Portable is truly a remarkable piece of work. Aside from being able to carry the usual games feature, it also boasts of music, photo, video, Internet and wireless connectivity applications. For most of you proud PSP owners, there are three ways to get to know your precious gadget. Either you take the time to read the manual, take the time to explore your PSP or browse around the net for the needed answer.

Well, the first thing you’ll notice when you format your Memory Stick Duo or Pro Duo Stick is that there are only folders for “game,” “music,” “photos” and “savedata.” According to Engadget, you would need to create another folder for your MPEG-4 video files in the main memory stick and not on the PSP directory. Label the new folder as MP_ROOT and create a sub-folder with the name 100MNV01.

Normally, this sort of procedure will cost you to shell out extra cash but Engadget showed us how to get around this little obstacle. First, you need to download a 3GP Converter and Once you have finished downloading the program, right click on the file and press extract here. Click on the new folder that will appear and run the set up. A window with undecipherable characters will appear. Paid them no mind and just scroll down the window to set the language to English. Then, select Customized: MP4 for PSP (direct, renamed) and press apply. It is the second to the last option. The next step is to choose where you want your downloaded videos to be saved and what quality you would want your videos to appear. I recommend you to choose C:\3GP_Converter.

The next step requires you to choose what quality you want your video to appear-from QVGA/15fps/216kbps/ Mono 48kpbs to AVC QVGA/29.97fps/ VBR QB25 Stereo/ 128kpbs.

Does that seem a little intimidating? Well, these numbers are nothing to be afraid of. Think of it this way. FPS stands for frames per second. Between 15fps and 29.97 fps, the latter produces smoother quality. But keep on mind that the better the quality, the long it takes to be converted.

After deciding on what rate you want, all that is left for you to do is to drag your video of choice to the blank section of the window and wait as the program converts it into something your PSP will recognize. The last thing you have to do is connect your PSP to your PC via a USB cable and transfer the newly converted file.

Another way to go about this is by using the pimp streamer vO.5. This allows you to stream audio and video in any format from your PC to your PSP through a wireless connection. While there are probably a dozen other ways (legal or illegal) to stream audio and video from PC to PSP, I hope these two work for you guys!

Reasons Why It’s Worth To Be A PC Gamer

Jay Hay Pee asked:

What do I mean by “worthwhile” and “promising”? Well, I never intended to just wildly list every game that can be played on PC, so I had to set up some criteria. For games that already were released the easiest way to judge their quality is through reviews. This listing originated from Gamespot and that still is the main source of reviews for this list. There are exceptions though, they had to be made because unfortunately Gamespot ignores large amount of PC games, especially those that aren’t available in retail. That’s why you will occasionally see review scores from other sites here. I tried to choose the most respectable and trustworthy ones for this task, like Out of Eight for indie games or Adventuregamers form well… adventure games :)

For upcoming titles it’s obviously harder to pick the games. I rely on my instincts, but since those can never be trusted I always need some backing up first. The most obvious ones is if the game is made by people who already have proven themselves with other games or mods or if it’s a sequel to a good game. Those are the main criteria, but they aren’t enough. I take real pleasure in listing lots of indie games and those are mostly done by newcomers, it’s a bit better if they previously made a good freeware titles, but that’s not always a case. So in cases of indie titles I like to use awards and nominations for such awards, especially those from Independent Games Festival or at the very least the game should have positive previews before I list them.

All this is done to show the good side of PC gaming, so positive selection was necessary. I hope those listings will be useful to you and will help you to discover interesting games you had no idea about.

Satellite Internet and Online Gaming: Does It Work?

Jacob Minett asked:

Online gaming is one of the fastest growing trends in the world right now. With games such as Runescape boasting subscriber numbers of around a million and World of Warcraft exceeding 7 million active members, the total number of MMOG subscriptions is verging on the absurd, quickly approaching the 14 million mark worldwide[6/06, mmogchart.com]. This tremendous growth in the popularity of the online gaming industry has, in part, been fueled by the accessibility of high-speed broadband internet. A high-speed connection allows for a much more enjoyable game-play experience. Everyone knows that online games work exceptionally well on DSL and Cable internet connections, but what about the newer high-speed service satellite internet? As satellite internet is becoming more readily available and cost effective more and more rural dial-up customers are making the switch to cash in on the faster speeds and always on access. But, when it comes to online gaming many are concerned that their game-play experience will be less satisfactory, if they can even connect to play at all.

The reason for this concern is the issue of latency. Latency is an expression of how much time it takes for a packet of data to get from one designated point to another. This is direly important when it come to on-line gaming in that latency translates into the time that it takes from the moment that a button is pushed to when the action is performed in the game. Often this can mean the difference between life and death. With DSL and Cable the response time is almost immediate, being between 50milliseconds-150milliseconds. The latency for satellite internet is between 600milliseconds-800milliseconds. This may sound like the end of online gaming for someone who has just made the switch to satellite internet but it is not. Although this degree of latency does all but rule out first-person shooters there are a good number of MMOGs that operate well over a satellite internet connection. And, although the effects of latency can never be completely eliminated, there are ways in which to improve upon them. The simplest way to do this is by speeding up the way that one’s computer handles and responds to information being transferred through the connection and by increasing the total amount of available bandwidth. Some operating systems have built in reserves on bandwidth that are non-essential to the functionality of most web applications, see link for a tweak http://www.wildblue.cc/wbforums/showthread.php?t=3323 .

By eliminating non-essential services i.e. bandwidth hogs that the average user never utilizes and dedicating more physical resources to the most used application can help tremendously. Minimizing the effects of latency down to the bare minimum allowed by the laws of physics enables one to play more online gaming that was before not workable and also speeds up the responses of other games that already do work. So, although there are limitations to on-line gaming over satellite internet there are also ways to improve upon game-play responsiveness and many games that will play well without operating system tweaks. Below is a list of online games for both console and PC that, according to subscribers that have tested and played them, do and do not work over satellite internet. This is not a definitive list of games guaranteed to work, so be cautious as results may vary.

Full PC Game Downloads – Quick Tips For Finding What You’re After

Craig Wilson asked:

There are quite a few avenues to take when searching for that favorite game download on the net. Sure you can take the way of the file sharing sites and risk downloading not only the game but also all sorts of nasties like spyware and adware or even a virus that may have the potential to send your beloved computer to the scrap heap. The chances that what you are downloading is not what it says it is are pretty high also on these file sharing sites. Don’t worry, there is always someone out there that wants to ruin your day!

Another avenue is using a site that will sell you certified virus free copies of the game you are looking for. Great for security and usually they will have a search feature and offer you a trial or demo of the game so you know what you are getting before you have to shell out any of the folding stuff. But what happens when you have played that game so much that you are sick of it or have come to the end? That game that you paid good money for is now sitting idle gathering dust on your hard drive, figuratively speaking. Probably not what you would call a wise investment!

The good news is that there are sites out there on the world wide web that offer you an unlimited amount of downloads for the one up front fee. The majority of these sites give you a guarantee that their downloads are free from disease so there are no security issues and most have an unbelievable number of games and other assortments that can be searched through so you are sure to find what it is that you are looking for. There is no more shelling out for each and every game that takes your fancy and once you join the sky is the limit as far as the number of downloads that you can have for free.

There is no doubt that a lot of people still prefer to go the way of the file sharing sites and take the risk of downloading something nasty and there is no doubt the virus programmers will keep doing their stuff as long as this goes on but isn’t your online security worth looking after? Also, can you justify paying for another game after the one that you bought not so long ago has lost it’s appeal? Maybe it’s just me but I think the answers to those questions are pretty straight forward!

Gaming Software Reviews

Caroline Becht asked:

Have a look at the gaming software reviews on the Internet before you buy a computer game. There are many computer games out there. Get an expert opinion on the computer games before you buy, so you can make an informed choice.

I can recommend the World of Warcraft game as it has been described widely as a friendly game. Everything from the colourful art style to the endearing player animations, to the many different personalities.

The World of Warcraft is an inviting experience. Blizzard’s passion for gaming joy is infectious, and its sense of humor disarming. This real time strategy game is one that you should play, no matter who you are.

Create your alter ego by choosing from a variety of colorful races and powerful classes, and begin exploring, questing, and battling in Azeroth, the setting featured in Blizzard’s Warcraft real-time strategy games.

Though multi player online role-playing games have been around for years, it has taken this long for the genre’s breakthrough hit to finally emerge. This is because World of Warcraft brings out all the best aspects of this style of gaming, if not many of the best aspects of gaming in general.

It also features many of the specific characteristics that have made Blizzard Entertainment’s previous games so entertaining, memorable, long-lasting, and successful.

Of course, the company’s past track record did not guarantee that World of Warcraft could have turned out this well. Such high quality simply cannot be expected, nor should it be missed.

You will find computer game rankings, recent releases, headlines, recommendations and video game reviews of the most popular and recent top video games on a large selection of different platforms, on the Internet.

For games on demand, news, previews and gaming reviews on a wide range of computer platforms, such as xBox, PC, Wii, PlayStation, PSP, PS2 and GameCube. Before you buy, look at Yahoo’s gaming software reviews.

My personal favourite is the World of Warcraft games, but, there are many games to choose from. The Internet has changed the way the world works, learns and plays. Why not take advantage of the reviews at your disposal on the web?

Want To Download Wii Games? Read This Now!

Jeremy Kelsall asked:

Are you one of the many that has been scouring the internet looking for free wii games? If you are then you need to read on…

The Nintendo Wii is quite possibly the most popular gaming console to hit the market over the years. Its interactive style of play have really pushed it heads and shoulders above its competitors from sony and microsoft. Many people are starting to wonder if it is possible to download wii games online and transfer them to a disk to either be played on a PC or their gaming console…the answer is yes.

Many sites now give you access to download full wii games. With this bounty of new found gaming paradise there are more than one thing to keep in mind when deciding which sites to use…and which ones to simply exit out of.

One of the main things to look for is a “contact us” tab on the main interface of the site that you are thinking about using. If they don’t provide contact information for you to reach them should their be any problems more than likely they are not legitimate. Its not you that they are trying to stay out of site from…its the authorities.

A decent “FAQ” is another thing to look for. If they can explain step by step so that even the newest of technology morons…such as myself can utilize their service and download wii games chances are they are legitimate. Someone trying to run a scam definitely would not go through the trouble of providing a decently written section with frequently asked questions.

Stay away from any site that even has a hint of the word “torrent”. I have had a few bad experiences with these sites as recently as last week. These sites claim to offer free files but not only are they illegal but they also contain viruses a large portion of the time. Do yourself a favor and skip these.

We all want the same thing…and that is to be able to download wii games…weather the reason is to save money or simply for the convenience factor. Take your time and consider which site you use carefully and your experience will be wonderful and one that you wont regret.

For a complete list of the best sites that I have found for free wii games which offer downloads…simply click this link DOWNLOAD WII GAMES
